bermuda 2006

[day 0]
dec 24, 7:51 am philly airport. yucky muffins, not-so-hot coffee and stale eggs on soggy toast - yummmmy! what a nice start to an east coast winter morning. in about an hour, the flight for hamilton takes off from philly airport. excited much? sure. tired and sleepy? you betcha! its amazing how images of pink sand, blue waters and cool breeze gets you thru the sweaty queues and tiring flights.

[day 8]
jan 01, 10:31pm san jose airport. feeling like crap. not just because we just left paradise, but because there are 3 active baggage claim belts and not one has our flight's bags yet. it hasn't even been announced. "oh well, its only our checked in luggage. lets come back later and get them", i say. see what a 8 day rendezvous with sand and water can do to you? you start caring less about bags and belts. we're going home to sleep. at least let us relive the wonderful moments in slumber land.

my sexy little toy (canon 30D) tried to capture those moments. check out the pictures here.

planning your own sun-n-sand getaway? any caribbean destination will help you unwind. jason rich's everything family guide to the caribbean is a good start. once you have decided on a spot, do yourself a favor and get fodor's guide. packed with tons of useful info. day trips and itineraries all planned out for you. now isnt that what we lazy vacationers want?

Bermuda has its own charm, though. think of a shaken-not-stirred cocktail of british and american cultures. hmmm, mumbai? could be, depending on how you look at it.

the american dollar is widely accepted throughout the island. infact with the 1-1 coversion ratio between the american and bermudian dollar, people interchange the two very often. hand the bartender an american 20 dollar bill, and you're likely to get back a bermudian 2 dollar bill (yes that was one drink, bermuda doesn't have a reputation for being an inexpensive vacation spot).

and while they smile while counting american dollars, they treat their tea-time (not coffee-time) very seriously. every day. 4pm. with egg salad sandwiches, croquets, biscuits (not cookies, please!) and jams. howz that for british flavor (i mean flavour)

nothing comes cheap on the island, except the clear waters and pink (yes pink) sand. luckily our resort (the highly recommended fairmont southampton) was right off "the beach" - that's what the locals call horseshoe bay beach.

plan on spending atleast 5 days or more. its probably the best way to enjoy bermuda. just don't forget to pack your sunblock, sunglasses and hat. and a whole lot of vacation spirit.
